Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks while surrounded by friends and family. For most of us, it's also a day to indulge! Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pie and cocktails... sounds wonderful! To avoid overindulging, try these 4 tips-
1.) After eating a hearty breakfast, lace up your SOMs and head out the door to your local Turkey trot. Turkey trots typically range from 5k walks and runs to full length marathons. You'll get in a great workout and the event usually helps to raise money/awareness for a good cause. Some organizations even collect donations for local food banks.

Turkey trots are typically "fun runs" and are open to families of all shapes and sizes. Our family has actually made it tradition every year!

This is also a great opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors before spending the rest of the day with your family. For added fun, some cities even hold costume contests!
For those in the Montrose area, here is the information for our local Turkey Trot, hosted by the San Juan Mountain Runners.
2.) Whether you are hosting or will be a guest, prepare your dishes using healthy alternatives. You may not be able to control what is in all of the dishes, but bringing some healthier options will ensure that you have at least a few to choose from. 3.) To help with portion control, use a smaller plate. This will make it look like you have more food on your plate, making it more satisfying. The website Reshaping Nutrition suggests filling half your plate with veggies first.

We don't recommend that you talk with your mouth full, but engaging in conversation during dinner will slow you down and may prevent you from eating after you are already full.
4.) You won't burn calories sitting on the couch! Start a new active family tradition, like going for a walk between dinner and dessert, or throwing around a football in the yard. Get the entire family involved and encourage healthy habits year round!
